My art is going through an evolutionary process. When I was creating my series of oil paintings I was inspired by surrealism and abstraction in order to convey inner states of being ranging from the joy and bliss of life to the social masks people wear.
I am now combining my oil painting with needle felting. I am still looking at inner states of being, but it has progressed to focus on the female/women's spirit. Each piece of work will have it's own expression and symbolism related to the essence of being a woman. My style is also evolving and I am currently taking more inspiration from Art Nouveau. For my future works I will explore working with combining needle felting and wet felting with silk and Japanese tie dye (Shibori).
My organic, abstract forms are intended to express spirit, emotion, passion, and love. When the pearl is represented in my works, it is intended to express the resiliency of one's spirit and soul and not just that we are alive, but that we are life. Silk and wool are both organic, versatile, and soft materials lending themselves again to the notion of woman and one's inner being.
Needle felting is done by using a special barbed needle that when used to agitate the fibres of wool, transforms it into a felted form. A wet method can also be used to create a similar effect by using warm soapy water and agitating the wool by hand. My wool pieces were created with the dry needle felting method.
